The Therapeutic Use of Daily Life Events

The Therapeutic Use of Daily Life Events, commonly referred to as dle ™, is designed to help the direct care practitioner become more effective in daily interactions with young people and families. Through a focus on everyday events and how these events connect to the overall goals established with young people and/or families, the direct care practitioner adopts a more pro-active approach in intervention. dle offers the potential to make every moment with young people and families more meaningful.

Whether one is involved with youths and families in group care programs, schools, community settings, family homes or any other program in which the helper is involved in daily life, dle offers both skills in creating interventions and a framework for thinking about what we are doing. Too often, training for direct care helpers offers techniques but not a framework for thinking systematically about one’s actions and interactions. When we think clearly, we do better work.

The essence of effective child and youth care practice lies in the ability to use everyday life events, as they are occurring, to help facilitate change for children, youths and families. This training will define and demonstrate this skill and will provide the opportunity for participants to incorporate this approach into their own work with young people.
